Hi , I have a maple tree 5 meters high in front yard, recently all leaves gone and some branches becomes quite crispy and fall off. I did a scratch test and it seems the lower part of the tree is still very strong, but not sure if it is still alive. any advice is appreciated to revive the tree.
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @kanava88. It's terrific to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about tree care.
Do you remember when you last saw signs of healthy growth, like fresh leaves or flexible green branch tips? Also, are all the branches as dry and brittle as the ones shown in your photo, or are some still bendy or showing green beneath the bark?
While Japanese maples are deciduous and will naturally drop their leaves, it does seem a bit early for them to be completely bare. If you're still getting green in the scratch test near the base, there’s hope — but the extent of dieback higher up might suggest stress, root damage, or disease.
I'd recommend you seek the assistance of an arborist who specialises in tree care for a thorough examination.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
