Hello Guys,
I’m planning to tondo landscaping From scratch.
I need some suggestions on how to utilise the area in a best possible way.
I can’t think beyond deck, garden bed and lawn. Lol.
Size of backyard- 10*12
so far I’ve started with doing garden bed retaining wall in the backyard parallel to rear fence.
Hi @gagan24991,
A good place to start with a project like this is with a quick sketch of the yard. A top-down drawing with some dimensions will help you visualise and plan out the space. Check out How To Design A Landscaping Plan for some guidance on this process.
With a basic top-down plan, we can see what you are thinking so far and propose some additions.
There are also plenty of projects on Workshop that you can take inspiration from. You might like to check out our Top 10 most popular landscaping projects, Top 10 most popular outdoor projects and Top 10 most popular garden makeovers for some ideas and inspiration.
Also, allow me to tag @EleventhCoastal, @Renowayoflife, @Noelle and @Dave-1 to see if they have any ideas for the space.
Let me know how you go, I am excited to help out wherever I can.
Jacob
Good Afternoon @gagan24991
Landscaping is always fun and yours is pretty much a blank slate ![]()
The top down sketch that @JacobZ has suggested is what I am suggesting as well. It dosnt have to be accurate measurement wise to start with, It just has to have in it the things that are fixed.
Fixed items for you -
- Fencelines
- Concrete edging
- Garbage Bin location
- Taps and services.
- Retaining walls or garden beds.
Potential items -
- Kids play things, swings, trampoline.
- Dog kennel
- Sandpit
- Paved BBQ area
- decking
- Lighting at night (solar or strung festoon lights)
- Pathways
- Clothesline Type (one that spins or a fixed bar one)
Trees/shrubs and wether they are deciduous as a last step plus teh size they grow width and height and pruning if needed.
If you draw up your yards as a large rectangle and add in the fixed items you have. You will end up with an area that you can think of as potential items (whoops forgot a shed/garden shed/greenhouse) Pathways should usually be teh shortest route as we always tend to shave off a few steps if possible so no point in making a path curve unless you really want it to.

I tried to sketch from top-down approach as requested.
The area which I highlighted as Brown - is what in question.
Green area is garden bed with retaining wall already done.
Black area is concrete driveway.
With me previous photos, now t will make more sense.
Hello @gagan24991
Thank you for sharing that sketch. I propose building a row of raised garden beds to the very left of the house if you are keen to grow your own vegetables. this would also be the perfect spot for a small green house. I suggest having a look at these top ideas - Top 10 most popular garden makeovers, Top 10 most popular raised garden beds and How to build a simple raised garden bed by @Adam_W.
For that semi triangular section in front of the windows, this would make a great flower bed combined with a water feature. I recommend looking at this guide for inspiration - How to create a pond in a pot by @Adam_W and the New water feature! by @Adam_W.
As for the large rectangular area at the very right this would make a perfect gathering spot and partial play area. I suggest looking at the Top 10 most popular fire pit projects and the Fire pit and walkway retreat by @steveq.
