My video (photo only cos you can’t add vids) this afternoon of lorikeets eating the leaves on the apricot tree. Bird salad!
Is this an issue I should do something about?
Hello @John57
Lorikeets munching on your apricot tree leaves definitely sounds like a cheeky afternoon for them and a surprise for you! While lorikeets are usually more interested in nectar, fruit, and blossoms, they can nibble on soft new leaves or buds, especially if other food sources are scarce. In most cases, this leaf nibbling doesn't cause serious long-term harm to a mature tree, but if your apricot is young, newly planted, or already stressed, it could slow its growth or weaken the tree.
If it becomes a regular buffet for the birds, there are a few gentle deterrents you can try:
If it was a one-off visit, you might not need to do anything especially if the tree looks otherwise healthy. But keep an eye on it for signs of repeated visits or damage to young shoots or buds, especially as spring approaches when the tree will be preparing to fruit.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Hi @John57,
Please note you can embed YouTube videos into your Bunnings Workshop posts. Sorry we don't currently offer video hosting, but you are certainly welcome to add your YouTube videos. The Insert video button is next to the Insert Photos button on out post editor.
Thanks,
Jason
I was going to mention that.
Consider one of these:
This is my Garden Sentry, I made few of them for both front and back yards.
I like to repurpose; some of the stuff from a gas patio heater, monitor stand, Peter's ice cream container and lolly container for weather protection.
The battery box uses 18650's recovered from two faulty Ozito batteries.
Photo on the right is 240V version using Holman irrigation solenoid.
All of the irrigation components and fittings are from Bunnings.
Was also used at night to scare Mr Fox.
Cheers
