What Victorian native tree should I plant?

I just got a permit for removing a dead tree in front yard, but I need to replace it with a Victorian native tree. I tried to search on Google but it's not clear to me what are the options, some have Melbourne native trees, some are Australian native trees, so can I get advice on the trees that are:

  • Victorian native tree
  • Won't grow too tall - but has to be 1.5 meters above ground to start with
  • Non-invasive root because my front yard is quite small

Thanks!

Re: What Victorian native tree should I plant?

Hello @heuristic,

Thanks for sharing your question about what native tree to plant. When you say, "won't grow too tall" What particular height were you after for this tree? Would a screening plant such as a Weeping Lilly Pilly work for you? The Banksia Marginata can grow up to m 5 meters if looked after properly. These of course are the most common native trees that I know you can look after and keep their height under control.

Unfortunately, the other trees I'm aware of grow up to at least 20-meters in height which means that they will put down deep large roots in your yard.

Let me call on our plant gurus @Noelle and @mich1972 for their recommendations on what trees to plant in your yard.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Re: What Victorian native tree should I plant?

Hi @heuristic

Depending on where you live, you should be able to find a local indigenous plants nursery that specialises in plants native to your particular area.

There is also a valuable resource in the 'Grow Me Instead' website - the Victorian brochure, which lists exotics and their native alternatives, can be downloaded here.

You may also seek assistance from your local Australian Plants Society group or even your local council.

Thanks for the reply!

I should have been more specific - 3 meters tall is ideal.
