What can I do about a soft decaying tree root?
Hi all!
I was gardening recently and discovered a medium thick tree root that was very soft, there was some mold present but very minor in one section. I've followed the root and the whole section I dug up (see photo) is also soft, however no other mold was found
The tree itself is healthy and shows no sign of disease around the base or in the leave, and is demonstrating new growth coming into spring.
The backyard was renovated around 6 years ago, so there is a chance the previous owners cut the root to allow the planter boxes to be built.
Could anyone please provide advice? I'm worried this will eventually affect the tree, which we love very much and don't want to lose!

Re: What can I do about a soft decaying tree root?
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Lmac1. It's sensational to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about tree care.
If the root is decaying it's likely already died back. The tree would have many more to support it, but to ensure this isn't something more serious than a severed root, and if you want to look after the tree, I'd recommend you employ the services of an arborist. When making enquiries for one, ensure they are in the practice of managing trees and ensuring their safety and health. You're not after a tree lopper.
They'll be able to assess the tree's overall health and advise on the best way to manage it so it's around for many more years.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
