What climber for north facing wall with shade?

Hi all,

Looking for suggestion for strong climber that suits this corner of my garden, there are bamboos on the other side so not much direct sunlight there.

I'm looking at banksia rose, clemantis but not sure if ther are the right choice.

Re: Suggestion for climber for north facing wall with shade

Hi @antta,

Given the dense bamboo and the narrow space in the photo, a climber that tolerates deep shade and doesn’t require full sun to thrive would be best. Banksia rose may not be ideal since it prefers full sun and could struggle in the shaded conditions you're describing. Clematis, while beautiful, typically requires some sunlight to produce its flowers, so it may not thrive in deep shade and could have fewer blooms. Instead, a climbing fig (Ficus pumila) would work well as it clings to walls without needing a support structure and thrives in full shade. Star jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides) is another great option if you want some fragrance, though it may grow slower in lower light. For a lush, tropical look, English ivy (Hedera helix) could also work, but keep in mind it can be invasive if not managed. If you’re looking for greenery to soften the brick wall, any of these would be a good fit, and if you want flowers, star jasmine would be a great choice.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
