What hedge, plant or flower can i put along my shaded fence?

My fence is in total shade all day, but I’d like to take out the yuccas and replace them with a nice plant feature of some sort

Hello @tahnim

Thanks for sharing the photo—your side path has a lovely clean layout, and replacing the yuccas could definitely soften the look and make it more welcoming. Since the area is in full shade throughout the day, you’ll need to choose plants that thrive with minimal sunlight and are also low maintenance. A great option available at Bunnings is the Aspidistra elatior, commonly known as the Cast Iron Plant. As the name suggests, it's incredibly hardy, tolerates neglect, and handles deep shade beautifully.

Another attractive and shade-loving choice is Clivia miniata. These plants produce beautiful orange or yellow flowers in spring and summer, and their strappy dark green leaves add a lush look all year round. Clivias cope well in dry shade once established and are also available in Bunnings’ current range—searching “Clivia plant Bunnings” should give you up-to-date listings.

If you're looking for more texture and variety, consider adding a few Bird’s Nest Ferns (Asplenium nidus). These are also very shade tolerant and create a striking architectural form that would contrast nicely with the straight lines of your fence and pathway. They grow well in pots or directly in the ground and are stocked at most Bunnings locations.

For easy upkeep, make sure the soil in that strip gets improved drainage and is enriched with organic matter such as compost or a quality potting mix like Scotts Osmocote 50L Premium Potting Mix, which is suitable for shaded locations. Adding a layer of mulch such as Cypress Pine Mulch will also help retain moisture and reduce weed growth.

A final tip: if you want to add some height or vertical interest, a shade-tolerant bamboo variety like Bambusa multiplex ‘Alphonse Karr’ can work well in large pots and won’t become invasive. It brings a tropical feel and soft movement to the space without needing direct sun. You can check availability by searching “Alphonse Karr Bamboo Bunnings.”

With the right combination of plants and a bit of preparation, you’ll be able to transform this shaded zone into a beautiful, low-maintenance garden feature.
