Best seal for painted MDF coaster/trivet?

Hi! I’ve recently completed a set of MDF circles with a combination of gouache and acrylic paint that I would like to seal and use as either coasters or pot rests/trivets. There are a lot of clear sealing sprays, so I’m wondering what would be my best bet for both waterproofing and heat resistance? Also, how long should I let them dry before applying the first coat and between coats? First time project, so all advice appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Re: Best seal for painted MDF coaster/trivet?

Hi @Amanda50,

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

Unfortunately, I am not aware of a clear coat that could resist the heat a trivet would experience. Any product you tried would likely discolour or soften if you sat a pot on it straight off the stove.

You might like to check out the advice in What sealant for plywood or MDF coasters for some possible options.

Typically, you should allow at least 4 hours between coats, but the specific product used will likely have a recoat time listed on the packaging. If the product's recommended recoat time is different, you should follow this.

Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Jacob
