We started renovating our home 2 years ago, and as most of you can probably appreciate, when you’re doing most of the work yourselves, then, things move at a snail's pace.
We are still yet to build our kitchen, we have a sink and a stove but that’s a project for another day. In the meantime we decided to design and build our new walk in pantry.
We redesigned the original sleep out and added a walk-in pantry off the new kitchen. I want a clean kitchen, so I designed the pantry to hold all of the dry food, small appliances, and utility storage.
Here's how we built it.
The next phase will be to build drawers for the base unity and doors for the utility cupboards.
We also have some antique doors we found that we will add to the entrance of the pantry.
Happy DIYing

We used VJ sheet on the back wall of the pantry and giprock on the ceiling and remaining walls. Once we had them installed we tape and plastered the giprock and filled the nail and screw holes.
Once sanded I colour drenched the room using Dulux Wash and Wear in Press Agent.
Derek and I build the pantry shelves and the base box out of plywood, we plan to add drawers as a phase two but the base shelves will work for now.
We added timber trim to the face of the shelves to strengthen the shelves and make the look more custom. We also added LED flexible tape lights behind the cornice and trim for ambient lighting.
As the Air fryer and kettle will be in the pantry we added an extractor fan and LED recessed lights
We also found a commercial fridge on market place.
The counter top is made out of VJ’s that came out of our original kitchen. Derek planed and cut them down and we sanded and stained them using Feast Watson Liming White stain and Varnish.
Afternoon @Renowayoflife
I was just showing your "Walk in Pantry" to the guys at work and showcasing what I really like about it
Then I noticed how you have done a diagonal cut to the corner cupboard but not the base. I was wondering if there was a reason for not doing the base? Something underneath? I like the diagonal cut as it will give more freedom of movement.
The second part is the bottom shelf linings, is that timber sitting on top? I have just redone my foyer at home with that same style of timber on top and it looks brilliant!

Hello @Marlia
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your experience with your designer kitchen.
I believe that it is the responsibility of kitchen designers to give the new owners solutions to possible issues that may rise up during the use of the kitchen. Giving the new owners fair warning in regards to benchtops that are not capable of withstanding hot cookware. Or at least providing them with options such as heat-resistant mats or timber pine boards to be used as pads to prevent benchtop burns. Providing fold away step stools or even integrating fold away steps into the design would mean that the designer is truly considerate of the owner's needs.
Again, thank you for sharing your experience with our members.

HI @Dave-1 Great question.
The diagonal shelf gives us more access and wiggle room onto the shelf however and gives us more access to moving items on and off the bottom shelf. We left the base as a rectangle as it gave us more storage and didn't restrict access, like the shelf did. Aesthetically I think it looks better as there's a consistent and straight line at the base beside the fridge.
You could cut the base down or build it on an angle but you would lose useable space doing so.
I hope that helps explain 😁 Claire
@Dave-1 I realise this photo shows the first phase, we now have a bar fridge beside this shelf so it makes more sense.
Hahahahah @Renowayoflife
Makes perfect sense and was going there in my thoughts. Your wall is still the main idea tile in my head for my new pantry style, yet to be started. ![]()
