Do I have to put a varnish on the surface of a bamboo benchtop?

I want to purchase a bamboo benchtop for my kitchen from Bunnings.   Do I need to put a varnish on the the surface of the bamboo bench top?

Hi @karenclancy,

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

I am assuming you've purchased a Kaboodle Bamboo Benchtop, which will require a coating, such as varnish, to finalise the installation.

You can use a clear varnish product such as this Cabot's Clear Benchtop Timber Finish, or you can use an oil such as this Kaboodle Clear Hardwax Oil.

You'll want to give the benchtop a light sand with some 120 Grit Sandpaper to remove any minor imperfections that could have occurred between manufacture and installation. Nothing crazy, just a light sand.

Once sanded, brush off any sawdust and wipe the bench down with a lightly damp cloth.

You can then apply 2-3 coats of your chosen finish following the manufacturer's instructions for application closely.

Check out Applying Clear Hard Wax Oil To Benchtops for some guidance.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Jacob
