Drawers installed in kitchen cupboard

I wanted to add an extra two drawers to a kitchen cupboard, I did install one for spices a while ago, now I decided to add more to make items easier to access.

Materials

16mm white melamine custom board.

30 mm countersunk screws.

White melamine edging tape.

400mm drawer runners.

40mmx20mm Tasmanian Oak, 400mm long to suit drawer runners.

Tools

Track saw.

Mitre saw.

Hot air gun , to install melamine edging.

Trimming Tool for melamine edging ( I use an electric planer blade for trimming)

Sandpaper to clean up edging.

Brad nail gun , to assemble drawers prior to screwing drawers together.

Countersunk drill bit to suit screws.

Battery drill.

Tape Measure.

Straight edge/rule.

Pencil.

Steps

Step 1

Mark and cut 16mm melamine board from cutting list for drawers.

Track saw cuts, first cut 2mm deep to reduce chipping, second cut full depth.

For the narrow cuts, I used the mitre saw, first cut set to 2mm depth , then full depth cut to reduce chipping.

Step 4

Countersink all pre drilled and assembled  drawers.

Step 5

Install drawer runners to drawers and cabinet. To install drawer runners to cupboard, I made up spacers to suit the drawer heights and used the 40mmx20mm Tasmanian oak for the drawer runners to allow room for drawers to clear door hinges,  starting from the bottom up, once all drawers installed, I fitted the drawer fronts , leaving enough gap to pull out each drawer without the use of handles

Re: Drawers installed in kitchen cupboard

Hi @JoeAzza,

They look like some nice sturdy drawers that will make your cabinet much more functional.

I like the solution of adding some tassie oak packing strips so the drawers pass by the hinges. Simple, but effective.

Thank you for sharing your kitchen cabinet upgrade. I am sure the new drawers are already proving worth the effort.

Jacob
