Enamel paint vs polyurethane paint

Hi brains trust,

I'm a little torn about what type of paint to use for to repaint my kitchen cabinets, and just wanted to understand what the difference is between enamel paint and polyurethane paint?

Re: Enamel paint vs polyurethane paint

Hello @aimeech87,

Thank you for your question about paint.

Polyurethane coatings are typically clear finishes that provide excellent protection against wear, moisture, and chemicals. They are commonly applied over painted or stained surfaces to add a durable and hard-wearing layer, which is especially useful in areas like kitchens.

That said, there are also specialised polyurethane paints available. These are tinted versions that combine the toughness of polyurethane with colour pigments. They are often used in commercial and industrial settings, but some are suitable for residential applications too. These paints offer very high durability, excellent chemical resistance, and can achieve a high-gloss finish that is both attractive and long-lasting.

Enamel paint, on the other hand, is traditionally oil-based, although water-based versions are now widely available. It is a hard-wearing paint that dries to a smooth, often glossy finish. Enamel can be tinted into a wide range of colours and is ideal for surfaces like cabinetry and trim.

From the image of your kitchen, it appears that your cabinets may already have a clear polyurethane finish. If so, proper surface preparation will be important before repainting. I recommend taking one of your cabinet doors into your local store to speak with a paint specialist, who can advise you on the best product and method for your specific project.

Looking at the picture of your kitchen it seems like it has a polyurethane finish on it. If it does here is a handy step-by-step guide that might help:
