How to attach breakfast bar to existing kitchen island?

Hi guys. I have decided to built a breakfast bar on our island benchtop. Seemed like a simple project but now I'm stuck.

As you can see, there is a big corner overhang. One side is overhanging 30 cm (10 cm resting on existing benchtop). The shorter side is overhanging 20 cm (20 cm resting on benchtop). My issue is - how do I attach it to the existing island? I'm not a big fan of visible brackets and also, the existing benchtop is overhanging few millimetres. I was thinking using some sort 'z' brackets and a glue but I'm not sure if it will be sturdy enough. Thank you.

Thank you so much for sharing your question about your breakfast bar project. There is a method of attaching angle brackets to your bench top and hiding it from view. Generally, you'll need to attach a timber mounting panel underneath the overhang of your original benchtop. The angle brackets need to be rebated into the panel and a cover panel placed in front of it.

I've placed a sketch below to give you an idea of how to put it together. You can apply the same technique to the other side of your breakfast bar. What's important is that the thickness of the back island panel and the back panel of the cabinet must be determined so that you'll know what length of screw you'll need to use. Please have a look and tell me what you think.

Hi Eric. Thank you so much. Very helpful. So I don't have to glue the breakfast bar to the benchtop at all now?

Hello @Martin1974

It will not be necessary to glue the breakfast bar to the benchtop. The brackets have enough connection points to hold the benchtop in place. Please make sure to use the maximum number of screws needed and use the longest ones that will work with your benchtop.
