How to fix leaking tap?

Hi,

I'm after some advice about how to fix a leaking tap. I've replaced a red washer but it's still dripping. Not sure what other parts can be replaced. See photos attached for the tap set (originally from Bunnings but I can't recall what model etc)

Thanks for sharing your question about your ceramic taps. Cermaic tap washers use ceramic plates to allow water to pass in and out, eventually they wear out and you get a water leak. Technically this process takes a long time unless of course the water has a lot of impurities in it which act like sandpaper on the ceramic surface. Changing the bottom red washer will not solve the leak, the entire spindle will need to be replaced.

However, in order to service the spindle, the handle must be removed first. I've placed an image below to give you an idea of how to remove the hidden nut behind the handle. You'll need the two-pronged tool from the Kinetic Spout And Handle Repair Kit.

Once you have the handle removed, I suggest bringing the spindle with you and compare to something like the Shaw & Mason Chrome 1/4 Turn Anti-Clockwise Ceramic Disc Basin Spindle or similar. Reassemble the tap in the reverse order installing the spindle first and then the locking nut followed by the flange then the handle.

So I'm assuming the whole spindle needs replacing and you can't just get the ceramic washer? We've had these taps for 5 years now but spending that much on new spindles doesn't seem worth it to me when we want to replace the kitchen in the next 12 months.

Is it worth reseating the taps at all?

From an investment point of view, I can understand your reluctance to spend that much on a spindle. However, you do have the option of transferring those spindles to your basin or laundry taps on the condition that they are compatible. In regards to the Shaw & Mason Chrome Six Point Basin Top Assembly, it's important to make sure that they are compatible with the tap base and that they are long enough to reach the bottom.

I suggest bringing your old ceramic spindle to the store and match the standard ones for height. If they are similar in height, then you can use them to replace your ceramic spindles.

Thanks again Eric. We couldn't get the other taps so ended up purchasing the spindles from the supplier and after installing these the leak has stopped 🙂
