How to get a good finish with linseed timber oil?

Hi,

DIYer here.....I am really confused and lost how to find the wood finish that I want.

Could someone please guide me what to buy buy to get these finishes :

I already bought this : https://www.bunnings.com.au/diggers-1l-anti-mould-linseed-timber-oil_p1670041?store=8199&gStoreCode=...

I am after finishes like these ( Linseed Oil and Polyurethane apparently):

If I need to mix them, does anyone know of some sort of refence ? Or it is mostly trial/error ?

Thank you.

Re: How to get a good finish with linseed timber oil?

Hi @ddel,

Thank you for your question.

Unfortunately, the first Youtube link appears to be broken so I can only see the second one.

It is hard to say for certain what they are using, but from the description on the second video, I suspect it is equal parts linseed oil, clear polyurethane varnish and thinners.

I would grab these three things and mix them together using a trial-and-error method to see what you like. Make sure you wear a mask as the fumes from thinners can be a bit intense.

Once you have gotten a ratio you are happy with, you can then apply the mixture to your timber. Remember that much of the quality of the finish comes down to the prep work, so make sure you sand and prepare the surface well before applying your oil and varnish mix.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Jacob
