How to lay vinyl peel & stick tiles over masonite?

We recently ripped up the vinyl in our kitchen to sand back the floor boards (we were having the rest of our hardwood floors sanded at the same time) but subsequently found there was Masonite underneath so opted not to sand the kitchen. We’re hoping to do a full kitchen renovation in the future so just want a flooring stop gap solution until then. As an interim solution I’ve bought some Hanwood peel & stick tiles from Bunnings. Is it possible to install these peel & stick vinyl tiles directly over the Masonite or would I need to do any prep work first?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your floor board.

Generally speaking, it would be ok to install peel and stick panels onto Masonite boards on the condition that the surface is in good order and is still relatively flat and not ripped or compromised. Would it be possible for you post a picture of your flooring so that our members can assess its condition. Once we see the surface condition of the Masonite, we'll be able to make recommendations if it is still viable or if it will need to be replaced.

Thank you for sharing those photos of your flooring. The surface appears to be in good condition, but those gaps and uneven sections might appear on the surface of the sticky tiles. In order to get a flat level surface, I propose installing 2440 x 1220mm 4.8mm Masonite Standard for the whole kitchen flooring if the budget allows. Otherwise, I suggest trying to sand down the uneven edges and filling the gaps with filler to achieve a flat level surface.

The lino tiles will stick nicely to the masonite, tho the transfer edges will be a [roblem, I would go with @EricL's solution of installing a larger piece of masonite. If your other par of the flooring hasnt been started I would go to the effort to rmove the masonite squares and sand the floor now. That way you wont need to worry about lino or leveling and the floor will be done for your later full reno. (my mums kitchen has lino tiles and they have held up for the past two years without any issue.

I have the same decision process for my kitchen, I have tiles, probarlly two levels of tiles and probarlly masonite underneath them all to factor in. Its a hard call but figur I might as well get it done then drag my feet and still need it done later.

I also agree with both @EricL and @Dave-1 and would lay new sheets of masonite to level of the entire area. It's an inexpensive material to buy and you would just use these tack nails with their veery sharp point, which are ideal for fixing masonite. I would also consider replacing and of the existing masonite sections that have an uneven or rough surface as this will ensure a better adhesion of the vinyl tiles.
