How to prep kitchen walls for tiling and fill holes?

I’ve removed all the tiles in the kitchen area and the new cabinets go in soon however when I removed the tiles and the tile glue parts of the wall have also gone with them.

I’d like to flatten this and fill the holes in around the window. Would I use cement render for this? If so, how best to apply?

That was some seriously strong glue @almostfinished! Normally, the tiles would pop off, but it looks like the adhesive has taken the concrete with it.

It sounds like you're dealing with a tough situation where the adhesive has taken some of the wall material with it, but don't worry—you can definitely fix this up before you install your new cabinets and tile. For filling in the holes and smoothing the wall, I recommend using Dunlop 5kg Ardit Rapidset Repair Mortar, which is ideal for patching and repairing damaged walls. This product will help you fill in the holes, including those around the window, and provide a solid base for tiling.

If the gaps are quite deep, you can apply the repair mortar in layers, allowing each layer to dry before applying the next. Start by mixing the mortar according to the instructions on the packaging and apply it with a trowel. For a smooth finish, spread it evenly over the affected areas, ensuring the wall is flat and even.

Once the mortar has set, you can use a smoothing tool or sandpaper to level it out and create a flush surface. This will give you a clean, solid wall that's ready for tiling and will prevent any gaps or imperfections from showing up once your new tiles are in place.

When working with repair mortars, cement-based products, or any materials that generate dust, it’s important to wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE). This includes gloves to protect your hands, goggles to shield your eyes from debris and dust, and a dust mask or respirator to protect your lungs from inhaling fine particles.

Hi Mitchell,

Thanks so much for your reply. For the deeper holes that I may need to do in layers, how thick should the layers be?

I am also wondering if I am able to use this same product to flatten out the wall surfaces that you can see in the first photo? The surface is still pretty even with just a few dips in it.

Yes, you can @almostfinished. However, it needs to be applied over a masonry surface and not a painted one. So if there's any paint left you'll need to remove it.

Please be advised that there is a risk of asbestos exposure in older homes where it was commonly used. If you are unsure whether the surface is asbestos, it's best to have it evaluated by a professional. Asbestos is found in a wide range of building materials, including wall linings and adhesives.
