I've taken the cupboard door off the replace the faulty hinge. Once I took the hinge off left in there is this metal plate that is fairly fixed in there. Anyone seen this before? I can't get the new hinge insert in there while it's in there.

It doesn't look like there is a mechanical fixing holding it in place, but it does look like it has dug into the walls of the rebate in the two locations I've indicated below.
My suggestion is to use a small flathead screwdriver or a flat tool to try to lever the piece out of the rebate.
If you stick the screwdriver under the tab I have indicated below, you should be able to lift the left side up. If the left side lifts, then these embedded sections should pull out and away from the wall.
If this doesn't work, try bending the embedded pieces away from the wall before trying again.
