Hi I've moved into a new home the previous owner painted the bench tops not sure if they used the right product or not. Anyway the bench top paint is now peeling. What can I use to fix this and still use my bench top. Or what can I use to cover it   I'm on a really tight budget.

Re: kitchen bench makeover

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @MsDIY. It's amazing to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about benchtop coatings.

If you’re able to share a few photos of the bench, that would really help our members understand the extent of the issue and offer more targeted advice. Let me know if you need a hand uploading them.

If the benchtop has been painted and the coating is now peeling, then unfortunately it’s likely the surface will need to be sanded back completely before applying a new, more durable finish—especially if you’re planning to keep using it regularly. On a tight budget, this can be done with a bit of elbow grease and some paint made for laminate or benchtops. I'd recommend you consider the Dulux Renovation range.

If the damage is only in a small section, though, a creative workaround could be to cover the area with a chopping board or decorative mat to hide the peeling for now while you save up for a longer-term fix.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: kitchen bench makeover

Thank you for responding I have uploaded the worst section. All areas are impacted by some degree. The kitchen is old style and the bench top space is limited so would be great to be able to use it.

Re: kitchen bench makeover

The benchtop is in fairly poor condition and could have been painted a couple of times now, @MsDIY. Sanding it back to the laminate and removing the existing paint would be key to getting a good and lasting result. The other option would be to have the benchtop replaced. Obviously, that would be more expensive, but there are some quite budget-friendly laminate benchtops on offer.

Re: kitchen bench makeover

What would you think about the vinyl contact stuff would this work. The plan would be to renovate the whole kitchen but not at this point

Re: kitchen bench makeover

Given the condition of the bench, I think vinyl would be worth a try @MsDIY. If it adheres, then it would certainly improve the look. Just check the cost, as for $125, you could have a whole new benchtop.
