How to replace a tap with an extender?

Good morning,

Can I ask for some advice as I went to change over to a new tap and found that my current set up has an extender on a normal spindle set up.

My plan was to just replace with a new chrome tap, does anyone have any ideas how I can add an internal extender to reach the tap washer.

It looks like you’re dealing with a standard spindle setup, not one that already has a separate extender pushed in — rather, just a longer basin spindle. This is fairly common, especially with wall taps or deeper-seated basins that require extra reach.

Spindle extenders are usually an add-on piece that fits onto the end of an existing spindle to give it the extra length needed to engage and seal properly with the tap washer seat. If your new chrome tap doesn’t reach far enough to seal correctly, you may be able to fit a spindle extender onto the end of your current spindle. These extenders are designed for exactly this purpose and can help bridge the gap without needing to replace the whole spindle.

Make sure to bring your existing spindle (or at least the measurements) with you when visiting your local hardware store so you can get the right size extender. You could potentially use the brass extenders from this Kinetic 15mm Wall Tap Spindle Extender - 2 Pack.

Good afternoon Mitchell,

Thank you for the advice and prompt reply. I have already purchased the tap from Bunning, basically I'm just trying to like for like in style.

I saw the extenders and had wondered if that was a solution, my only concern was the way the photo is displayed the housing looks upside down. I wondered if that was just how they took the image.

I'll head in tonight on my way home and collect a pair from my local Bunnings.

I would only use the extender portion I've circled in red @Michael10. The copper fittings at the bottom of the image are if you want the whole spindle assembly further out of a wall cavity. We certainly don't want the spindle assembly further away with your situation, as it already can't compress the valve.
