How to replaster a wall after removing tiles?

Hi Guys,

I am currently renovating my old kitchen. Picture attached. I’ve just removed the old tiles from the wall. The wall is brick with a layer of render and then plaster board I think. Where the tiles have been removed it is brick, render, plaster and a tile adhesive. My question is how should I resurface or replaster the area where I have taken the tiles off? Any help would be great. Thanks!

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about plastering your kitchen wall.

In order to give our members a better idea of how thick the plaster is, would it be possible for you to post a closer picture of the wall? This will allow us to determine if the damage is deep and the plaster is high. If so, it means that you'll need a render that can match the original height of the plaster.

However, if the coverage is thin and the damage not so deep, you'll be able to use a multipurpose filler such as the Poly 1kg Multipurpose Interior Powder Filler. Are you tiling over this surface again or will you be putting something else in? Any extra information you can share about your kitchen renovation plans would be very much appreciated.

Thanks for your reply.

I’ve attached two more images of closeups. I’m going to be painting the wall as the finish and not tiling. The first image is of an area which is not too deep, the second image of one where the tile had removed everything back to the brick!

Thank you for posting those extra photos of your wall. This project will really be a challenge for you as part of your brick wall will need to be rendered in order to bring it back to its original level. You'll then need to do a white set internal render in order to restore the flat white finish on your wall.

Here are some handy step-by-step guides:

For the brick render I suggest using Rockcote 20kg Grey Quick Render and for the white set render, I suggest Gyprock CSR 20kg Hardwall Plaster in combination with Lime Putty. Please note that the Lime Putty will need to be specially ordered at the special orders desk.

for the first image I used in my question, should I use the multipurpose powder filler? And then for the wall where the brick is showing the quick render and hard wall plaster?

Hi @joek123

You might be able to get away with just using the White set render for the other wall. Generally, it would be better to just have a fewer number of products so that mistakes are avoided when rendering.
