Hi, have a rough sawn timber bench top in my granny flat which needs sealing to protect from staining and moisture. Ideally end result will be able to be wiped over. Would like to use water based products. Can anyone help?
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @oconnorjk61. We're pleased you could join us.
We have a step-by-step guide by experienced member @Nailbag How to restore a timber benchtop that should be all you need, but there's also advice from many community members in the article How do you seal a timber kitchen benchtop?
Please have a look and let us know if you have any follow-up questions. You might also like to share some photos of your benchtop so members can see what you are working with.
Thanks,
Jason
Thanks Jason. This one is a little different though as it’s rough sawn timber and it’s our preference to not sand it but just seal it. Any advice?
Hello @oconnorjk61
Yes, you can seal the benchtop, but you'll need to sand it just ever so lightly to remove the surface splinters. Your aim is to remove as much of the splinters without making the surface too smooth. Once you've made the surface safe, I suggest looking at Cabot's 1L Satin Clear Benchtop Timber Finish and applying a first coat. Once the sealer cures, I suggest checking the surface with your hand and if you feel any sharp splinters, I recommend sanding those down as well before applying the second coat.
If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.
