How to repair damaged floor tiles?

We recently renovated our kitchen and the new layout differs a bit from the older one. The biggest issue now is that at some places (photos attached) there is a mismatch from where the tiles/skirting was cut for the older kitchen and where the new cabinets end (photos attached). What would be the best way to fill in the gaps in these places? I have a few spare tiles, but do not know how to cut them.Floor 1Floor 1Floor 2Floor 2Skirting 1Skirting 1Skirting 2Skirting 2Floor 3Floor 3

Re: Kitchen Floor Tiles Gap Filling

Good Evening @nipunvar

To cut the tiles I would clamp a tile to your sawhorse/bench with a bit of an overhang and use a small cutting disk on a grinder. I would also practice on some other tiles first to make sure you feel confidant  (I have not done this myself but is how I would go about it)

For the first test pieces I would cut two different sizes, one that fits the hole exacyly and one with a gap of about 2mm around it. Just to see which blends best with your existing floor.

I am not sure what would be best to bed the tiles in  Its all theory in my head at this point. The first photo with the large rough hole, I would cut the new bit to fit the largest square sections and then use grout to cover the extended hole area.

With the skirting board, I would remove the shorter lengths and replace it. Take the small section into bunnings and see if you can match it profile wise to something instore. I would also repair the broken plaster before replacing the skirting just to have a smooth surface to work with.

92 x 18mm 2.7m White Primed FJ Post War Pine Moulding I think is yours.

Re: Kitchen Floor Tiles Gap Filling

Hi @nipunvar,

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

It's great to see that @Dave-1 has already jumped in with some advice.

To cut your spare tiles, you would use a tile cutter or tile saw for longer straight cuts and an angle grinder with a diamond blade, such as this Kango 125mm Turbo Diamond Saw Blade, to make more intricate notched or curved cuts.

I would also suggest replacing the skirting, although I think you might have 66 x 18mm 5.4m Moulding White Pine FJ Primed Half Splayed. You can always take it in-store to compare to ensure you get a good match. Check out How To Install Skirting Boards for some guidance on this.

If you have any other questions about particular aspects of the job, please let me know so I can assist further.

Hey Dave,

Thanks for the advice.

But I don't have any work benches or saws to do this with. I might have to get some outside help.

Re: Kitchen Floor Tiles Gap Filling

Hey Jacob,

Thanks for the advice.

Would I be able to cut the tile pieces in a Bunnings store? As I said above, I don't have any vices or saws for this work?

Also, is there a way I can match the grout colour to the tile?

Re: Kitchen Floor Tiles Gap Filling

Hi @nipunvar,

Unfortunately, no, that is not something we offer.

If you do not have the facilities to do it yourself and you don't want to invest in them, then it might be an idea to have a tiler come and do it for you.

Matching the grout can be a little bit tricky, but we should be able to get something pretty close. I'd suggest you start by giving the grout a good clean to reveal its true colour. Use a Grout Brush with Grout Cleaner to remove all the dirt and grime to reveal it's true colour. Once clean, we can look into a colour match. Something like Dunlop 1.5kg Flexible Coloured Grout - Slate Grey might be close.

Let me know if you have further questions.

Jacob
