How to stop tomatoes cracking and cucumbers burning?

Hi bunnings team,

Can you please guide me what's happening to my tomato and cucumber plants .Tomatoes are started cracking what's the reason for that, and my cucumber plant grew one big cucumber and then after flowering fruit start burning can you please tell me what's wrong with

my plant.

I've attached the images of first cucumber which was fine .

Tomato cracking is almost always caused by irregular watering. When tomatoes experience a dry period and then suddenly receive a lot of water, either from heavy watering or rain, the fruit swells faster than the skin can stretch, and it splits. To reduce cracking, aim for more consistent watering so the soil stays evenly moist rather than cycling between dry and wet.

With your cucumber plant, having the first fruit develop well, followed by later fruit failing after flowering, is also quite common. This is usually caused by stress. Common causes include inconsistent watering, high heat, nutrient imbalance, or pollination issues. Cucumber plants need regular deep watering, especially once they start fruiting. If the plant dries out even briefly, it will often abort developing fruit.

It can be tough with the high temperatures that we experience during Australian summers, but the most important thing is to be consistent with your watering.

Thanks Jacob for letting me know the root cause of them ,does fertilising plant will help as tomatoes are full of fruits cucumber as well and how often should I fertilise please tell when is fruiting and not fruiting .

Hi @BismaAbbid,

Generally speaking, an application of fertiliser will help with the overall health of the plant, but it won't help with the issues of splitting and irregular sizes so much.

During the growing season, applying a liquid fertiliser such as Richgro Black Marvel Tomato And Vegetable Food Liquid Fertiliser Concentrate every week or so, following the application rate on the packaging, will certainly be worthwhile regardless of whether fruiting has started or not.
