Re: Sealent for cement trinket dishes

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @aira. It's brilliant to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about sealants.

You're looking for quite a specific combination of qualities in a sealant—food safe, water based, heat resistant, and with a glossy, glaze-like finish—which can be tricky to find in a single product. In most cases, it's better to tailor the sealant to the intended use of the item. For example, if you're making a dish that's intended to hold food, you'd want to focus on using a certified food-safe sealant. For candle jars, on the other hand, heat resistance becomes more important than food safety.

Unfortunately, sealants that are both food safe and heat safe are quite rare, as food-safe coatings are generally not designed to withstand high temperatures, and heat-safe finishes aren't typically certified for food contact. It sounds like you're after something with a glazed ceramic look—have you considered whether a kiln-fired glaze might be an option? Cement won't behave quite like clay, but there may be specialised coatings available through ceramics suppliers that offer a similar effect.

We do carry some general-purpose craft sealants that are water-based and offer a glossy finish, but most aren't food or heat safe.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
