Barn door for kids playroom

Feature barn door, Wife wanted a herringbone barn door to separate the kids retreat from the main living and dining area.

The design phase went as follows:

  • Measure the area i need to cover
  • do a rough drawing for the door to confirm sizes
  • confirm how the door is going to hang off the wall - we had to get a 4.5m piece of wood as a backer to hang the door off.
  • do a comparison of buying and making it - cheaper to make it.
  • get as much of the wood cut to size at bunnings to save you time at home.

Steps

Step 1

Order and collect the materials - order the rails.

Step 2

Create the Frame of the door - got these cuts to size at bunnings to reduce the work at home.

Step 7

Complete the 1st stain - 3 in total (hand to sand back to wood due to some unevenness with the stain.

Step 8

  • Complete 2 more coats of the stain with sanding in-between coats.
  • Used a thin pine for the ends
  • We did a 2mm line at the bottom of the door for the runner
  • I got a 4.5M long piece of pine at 45mm wide painted it white and used that as the runner mount
  • Measured the height of the door - height of the runner and the total height including the runners attached to the door.
  • Mounted the rail and hooked the door in.

Step 9

Door complete, the order side has a handle.

Re: Barn Door for kids playroom

Hello @josephbaca

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your sliding barn door project.

That is an absolutely stunning feature barn door. The herringbone pattern is not only bold but immaculately executed, the alignment of each timber slat draws the eye to the center in a way that adds real depth and character to the space. The symmetry is impressive, and it’s clear that a lot of care went into measuring and placing each piece with precision.

The rich, warm finish of the timber contrasts beautifully against the white wall and dark track hardware, giving the whole setup a polished and intentional feel. The sliding mechanism looks rock solid and smoothly integrated, making it not just a functional element but a genuine statement piece. It’s a brilliant solution for separating the kids' retreat from the living area practical, stylish, and full of personality. Your assembly work is spot-on, and the craftsmanship deserves a proper nod. Truly, an impressive result.

Eric
