If you’re looking for a very dark or near-black finish on your timber floor, Feast Watson's black Japan timber floor stain and varnish is a solid option. It will give you a very deep brown to almost-black tone.
If your goal is pure black, though, it’s a bit more involved. You’d need to apply Feast Watson's Black Proof tint stain to achieve a true black colour. Once the stain has dried, you can apply a protective topcoat of polyurethane to seal the surface, such as Feast Watson floor varnish, to provide durability for foot traffic. This two-step process, staining, then poly, ensures both the colour depth and a hard-wearing finish. With either method, you need to sand the timber floor back to bare timber before applying the products.
The main thing to keep in mind is that black stains will always slightly highlight the timber grain, so the floor will have texture and character rather than being a flat, painted black.
