Built-in bookshelves

We decided to do away with our freestanding shelves and put in a bookshelf that looked like it belonged. With a little help from Ryobi and Ikea and the helpful team at Bunnings we did this!

Materials

Plywood

Liquid nails

Paint

Ikea bookcases

2x4s

Cornice and cornice glue

Tools

Ryobi Multi tool

Steps

Step 1

We started with carefully taking off the skirting boards with the plan to reuse them in the finished project

Step 2

Measuring up the space we worked out where we would need to position the shelves and built a base and frame for our IKEA Billy Bookcases then screwed these in place

Step 3

We fixed the bookcases to the frame and screwed them into place

Step 4

Next was our plywood. Bunnings helped us cut everything to size but we did also use our drop saw once as we overestimated the height. We used nails and liquid nails to fix it into place

Step 5

Sanding and more sanding. We did several repetitions to get the plyas smooth as possible, sanding between coats of primer then paint.

Step 6

Next we glued the skirting boards in place and the ceiling cornice

Step 7

Finally we caulked and painted. Pretty happy with the outcome

Re: Built-in bookshelves

Good morning @KazMG

Nice work  Can never so no to too many bookcases!

You mention sanding the ply? I was wondering where you used the ply?  I was thinking it was plaster but maybe that is the ply?

Any chance of photos of the base as you built it? That is one thing I always find interesting

Re: Built-in bookshelves

Hi Dave, yep you're right, we decided on plywood instead of plaster for the face of the built in. Partly as it was such a small gap, it took a bit of work and patience to get the finish right with sanding in between layers but actually came up great!

Here are a few of the work in progress pics.  I did the grunt of it over one weekend however we were a bit optimistic.  With two little kids bobbing around we packed the shelves up for the week in-between until we could get back to the sanding and painting
