Hamptons-style upcycled buffet

Hamptons-style upcycled buffet

This buffet had survived the 'attention' of  rambunctious toddlers, acrobatic pre teens and distracted high schoolers and came through it with many dings and dents, scratched and scrapes! Now it's this old girls turn to have some TLC.

I started removing the hardware, doors and drawers. I used Selleys Sugar Soap to give it a good clean. Next my Ozito 80grit Random Orbital Sander made light work completely removing all the old stain, scratched and coffee cup stains from the top and scuff sanding the rest of the piece.

I used Monarch Fill, Sand and Go filler to cover any deep scratches and a small chip on the wood. This stuff is easy to use and you cannot see it under paint!

*Warning Eww moment ahead* One thing I noticed when cleaning, was a little area at the base that smelled like cat pee :-o! Regular cleaning didn't cut this smell. So I mixed some cleaning vinegar after a good sugar soap scrub. Together they were good but I needed something to really stop the smell.

My Bunnings Angel suggested Zinsser BIN Shellac Primer. It covers all stains, odors, cigarette smoke and cat pee smells! It comes in a spray can so it's great for small cat sized areas!

After an allover 240grit sand, I used my favourite paint, British Paint interior. 2 coats covered the old brown/orange stain. The top I stained with one coat of rich, dark Walnut. Stain was protected with Polyurethane spray in gloss.

The metal cup handles got a quick spray with Fiddly Bits Black Spray Paint (Gloss).

The drawers needed something exciting to give a pop of colour while still keeping the crisp clean feel.

Wandering around my local Bunnings waiting for inspiration and I found IT!!

Boyle 1.5m x 45cm Self Adhesive wallpaper in the Vintage Blue Tiles pattern. So many styles and patterns available in self adhesive wallpaper that's easy to use and durable.

A quick spray and wipe inside with wood conditioner and this beast was a beauty!

Re: Modernizing a Buffet - Hamptons Style

Hello @DanaR

This is truly inspirational. If you hadn't mentioned the liner, I would have assumed that it came with the drawer. Using the Boyle 1.5m x 45cm Self Adhesive wallpaper as your drawer liner just made your upcycle project so much better. I must compliment you on the timber top finish, It looks flawless. Did you use a roller or did you finally take the plunge and test your sprayer? It's ok if you didn't, but I'm curious to know what you used. Your choice to paint only the front end of drawers gives it a wonderful custom finish. You've definitely captured the Hamptons spirit with this upcycle project.

Your skills in refurbishing furniture have jumped in leaps and bounds. My next tip for you when deodorizing furniture. I suggest using Peerless JAL 750ml Attack Odour Neutraliser or an anti-bacterial spray. This will eliminate any smell that may have attached itself to the wood. I keenly look forward to seeing your next furniture rescue.

Thank you so much for sharing this upcycling project.

Hi @DanaR

What a stunning transformation! Looking at the original I would never have guessed it could have such modern beauty.

Would you say that your sanding tools are easy to use?

Katie

Re: Hamptons-style upcycled buffet

Hi @KatieC , thank you for your nice words! And YES! Once I got over them being a little bit (ok-a lot) intimidating I actually enjoy using power tools and the Orbital and detail sander are very user friendly.
