How do I fix the scratches on this headboard?

I recently purchased this lovely solid wooden bed frame, and unfortunately damaged it while moving. Basically it's scratched around the edges (particularly the bottom - see photos attached).

Will I need to sand it all back and re stain? Or just a section of it (the stain is walnut) Or could I get away with using a repair kit?

It’s likely that the scratches will need some sanding to properly fix them, but it depends a bit on what caused the marks in the first place. If it was something like a white-painted wall or other surface that rubbed against the headboard, there’s a chance it’s just surface paint transfer rather than actual damage to the timber. In that case, you could try gently using a magic eraser or a soft cloth with a bit of mild cleaner to see if the marks come off before doing anything more invasive.

If the scratches have actually gone into the timber, then lightly sanding the affected areas down to fresh wood is the next step. After sanding, you’ll need to stain or oil the timber to restore the finish. The tricky part here is matching the existing walnut colour. Walnut stains can vary significantly, and the manufacturer’s original stain may not be available, so using a new stain on just the scratched section will almost certainly look different from the rest of the headboard.

Because of that, the most reliable way to get a consistent finish is to lightly sand and re-stain the entire panel or section so that the colour matches evenly. It’s one of those unfortunate situations where touching up just the scratches probably won’t give a perfect result, so a full panel refresh is the safest way to go. However, you could also try masking the scratches with wax timber repair crayons.
