How to build a double loft bed?

Hey guys i would like to try building a loft bed for my son with a bit of a gaming set up underneath and I'm having a hard time finding plans and I'm second guessing myself to much to just do it myself

Re: double loft bed

Hello @tomyc

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about building a loft bed.

Depending on where you are, I suggest checking out the rules and regulations in your state in regards to building a loft bed. This is to just make sure that your build follows the important safety guidelines set by the state. I suggest having a quick look at this discussion - D.I.Y. kids loft bed by @Tara86 and How to build a loft bed? by @smidd9. These are some of the discussions I could find that referred to loft beds and how to build them.

I understand that the plans on offer online can be overwhelming, I suggest getting very specific with your search by including bed size, height and any other details you might want included. There are also plans for sale if you wish to use specified plans which takes the guesswork out of the equation. But as I mentioned make sure that it is the right size for you.

Let me call on our experienced members @Tara86 and @GwenH for their recommendations.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric

Re: How to build a double loft bed?

@tomyc

Hi - Loft beds are such a fantastic way to add more room to a kids bedroom and also makes a nice feature. I’ve actually built 4 different loft beds for my kids over the years, having to rebuild as they got older and change depending on what they wanted to use underneath for.

It can be a bit overwhelming to start as you want to make sure it’s secure and I found that securing the bed base to the wall studs was the best option for me.
Whether you want to secure to the wall or not the most important thing is to make sure you use strong thick timber for the posts. I used untreated pine 90 x 45 by 2 to create 90 x 90 posts. Was a lot cheaper than buying ready made posts.
To add security I always had timber secured along the bottom 3 sides keeping the posts in place and along the middle just like in the picture you provided. Try looking online for free plans to get ideas on different styles but most use the same basic steps to help make it easier.

If you need more information let me know and good luck!
