How to build a magnetic board?

Hello, I am hoping to find a suitable option for a metal sheet that is magnetic.

I would like to create a place in my room to hang up my magnetic art supplies.

I am planning on either painting it or covering it with a thin vinyl wrap for aesthetic purposes.

Ideally rectangle, square will do! 50cm x 40cm would suit best

Open to other suggestions on how to create this also!

Re: Magnetic Board Choice

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @vivarose. It's brilliant to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about magnetic sheets.

You might like to read through this project I submitted a while back: Create a kids magnet board. In it, I use a 1200 x 600 x 0.55mm Galvabond Mini Sheet and cover it with Boyle 1.5m x 45cm Self-Adhesive Film - White Gloss. Being a steel sheet, magnets will stick to it.

There are no sheets in your exact size, but the 600 x 300 x 0.75mm or 600 x 600 x 0.75mm would be the closest. Sheets can be cut down with aviation snips, but they can leave the edge a bit untidy. Best to leave the sheet full-sized if possible.

This would obviously work if your art supplies have magnets attached to them. However, you might be referring to metal art supplies, which would require the board itself to be a magnet. There are no magnet sheets that I am aware of, but we do have a range of magnets you could fix to a timber board instead. We also have a wide range of pegboards and accessories, which you could use. Check out @prettylivings' Craft room with storage for some amazing inspiration.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Magnetic Board Choice

Hi Mitchell!

Thank you for your help. My art supplies will have magnets attached to them.

Seems like that's the best fit

Appreciate your help

Re: Magnetic Board Choice

Oh appreciate your post! I love all your projects btw! Could I ask if you have any idea how to attach this metal sheet to a living room wall? I checked that metal sheet in store but it feels heavy for me lol, couldn't hold it with one hand, my concern is that will drop from the wall and hurt the toddler, not sure if I found the correct product though. Could I have your advice? Thank you so much!

Or would that be safer/easier if I just paint with this?

White Knight Rust Guard Medium Grey Metal Primer Paint - 1L

But would that work that same with the metal sheet?

I wanted to make this entire rectangle TV area black and magnetic☺️ so no TV anymore lol! Just imagination for my little ones😆

Appreciate your reply in advance!

Re: Magnetic Board Choice

Hi @DonNorman,

That sheet is 3kg, so not overly heavy, but not light. What's the living room wall made of? Those details will help us guide you to the correct attachment product.

You could likely predrill at least the four corners of the sheets and then fix them to the plasterboard with Wallmates or masonry with wall plugs.

Ensuring it is secured well is important; that's why I would probably fix the sheet with screws to the wall, then also come back, like in the guide, and fix a timber frame around the edges.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
