How to build a room divider with bench?

Hi there,

How would I go about building something like this without drilling into the floor? I would like to be able to remove it if I change my mind and not have to worry about patching the floor.

Crossed out the area in red as I am more interested in understanding the stability of the veritical dividers. Would like it to be strong enough to hang a heavy object, for example a big lcd TV.

The above is just a sample pic only, welcome any suggestions for a stable divider and bench build without drilling the floor.

Hi @Shotime,

If you didn't want to connect to the floor, you'd need to design the bench to help the divider be self-supporting. Then, you'd need to attach the divider to the ceiling frame and the wall at several locations.

It's impossible to create this divider safely without it being adequately connected to the house structure. Otherwise, it poses too great a topple and crush risk.

I have come back with a different mindset and a plan:

Potentially using Kwila balustrades as the vertical slats. However, i note that they don't come in 2.4m? https://www.bunnings.co.nz/specrite-42-x-42mm-1-2m-kwila-balustrade_p0035833.

Also, grateful on any recommendation on the materials.

I'm sorry but the Kwila 42x42 only comes in 1.2-meter lengths. I suggest having a look at Pinetrim as an alternative for your build. They can be stained and sealed if you are after a dark finish. For the large flat sections, I recommend having a look at Plywood.

Please note that your new design takes into account support for one side but not the back. I recommend turning your design into a "T" instead of an "L" shape as there is still a possibility of one side tipping over. I still recommend following MitchellMc's suggestions and to anchor your divider into the wall and ceiling frame.
