Hi,
would like to make wardrobe as a DIY.
so which wood or sheet and tools should I use to make this?
thanks
Hi @jack89,
Thank you for your question.
Your example wardrobe is made from melamine-covered particleboard such as this CUSTOMpine White Matt Carcass Particleboard.
To D.I.Y. your own wardrobe, you will need to work out the size of all the panels, then cut the particleboard using either a tablesaw or a circular saw. With a circular saw, you can use the technique shown in How To Cut Laminate Benchtop, where a spirit level is used as a cutting guide, to get nice, straight cuts. Melamine is notorious for chipping out around the cut line, so it's recommended to use a fresh saw blade with a high TPI (teeth per inch) count, such as this Diablo 165mm 60T Ultra Finish Circular Saw Blade. You can also apply painter's tape along the cut line, then cut through the tape to help reduce chipping out.
To screw everything together, you should use chipboard screws. You will need to predrill pilot holes for the screws and countersink them so the heads sit below the surface of the sheet and can be covered. For predrilling, you will need a drill with a suitably sized drill bit for the screws. Generally speaking, a 3.5mm Drill Bit should work well, but it depends on the screws you use, so make sure to compare the drill bit to the screw. The team at the tool shop would be happy to help with this. You can then use a countersink bit to add a countersink to the pilot holes.
Once everything is screwed together, as the screws will sit in a countersink, you can use White Self Adhesive Screw Caps to cover them. Any remaining areas of exposed chipboard can be covered using Iron-on Melamine Edge.
Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
