I would like to convert this ginger jar into a table lamp but need to know how to drill a hole into the side of it without breaking it. Would love any advice.
Hi @Milly1,
To start off Google 'What is the Rehbinder effect on ceramics?'.
You will need:
Cordless drill
Diamond or Carbide drill bit set.
Masking or painters tape.
Foam packing from packaging.
Mark the hole location with texta.
Apply tape over the hole mark as a cross.
BTW: That is my sketch not one of the grandkids.
Drill on slow speed (driver position not drill) and start with the smallest bit.
Go slow don't push hard, let the bit do the work.
Cheers
Hi Alan Many thanks for your reply to my query and I did look up the Rehbinder effect which was helpful. I assume I have to submerge the jar in water while drilling to reduce the likelihood of it shattering. I will give it a try once I muster the courage and materials. Hopefully my next post won't be "How to repair a shattered ginger jar" but looks like it's a risky task requiring the utmost patience and a bit of luck.
RE: How to repair a shattered ginger jar 😂 😂 😂 😂
Just had a thought... buy a cheap practise jar.
Good luck
Hi @Milly1,
Just to add to @AlanM52's already fantastic advice, I'd suggest using the Diablo Speedemon Ceramic and Tile Drill Bits in the best size for you.
Make sure you take it nice and slow and don't apply too much pressure. Like Allan said, let the drill bit do the work.
Good luck!
Jacob
Many thanks Jacob, I'm very nervous but will give it a try once I buy the drill bits.
