How to cover exisiting straw ceiling with VJ Panels?

Hi There

We have just bought a house and on the upper level there are beautiful original beams with straw. We were wondering if we could install primed vj panels straight over the top? Or would be need to remove the straw? Just thought they could be kept for insulation?!

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @emmawigg. It's fantastic to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about installing VJ panels.

You can indeed install primed VJ panels directly over the top of the straw, provided you can find solid spots to fix the panels into. The straw can remain as it will continue to provide some insulation, which is a nice bonus.

However, the challenge will be ensuring that the VJ panels are securely fixed to the ceiling. Since the straw may not provide enough of a surface for the panels to adhere properly, I would recommend adding battens across the ceiling. Battens are horizontal strips of timber that can be attached to the structural members, creating a secure framework to fix the VJ panels onto. This method not only ensures a firm fixing for the panels but also allows you to keep the straw in place between the battens and the ceiling.

Make sure the battens are spaced evenly and securely fastened to the beams to avoid any sagging or movement over time. After the battens are in place, you can then attach the VJ panels, and they’ll look great while maintaining the benefits of the straw insulation beneath.

Hi Emma - We have the same ceiling (also combined with wood panelling!) as you and also hope to cover it. I wondered how you got on with the project? Did you do it yourselves and were you happy with the result? What size battens did you use? Thank you!!

Let me tag @emmawigg to make them aware of your question. It would be interesting to find out what the VJ panels look like when they attached it. If you have a similar set up with the same timber framing, the suggested solution was to add timber battens to provide support to the VJ panels.
