How to cover floor vents with hybrid flooring?

Hi Bunnings community,

My house is on stumps and has a gas heater vent on floor. I’m planning to decommission the gas heater and replace them with individual split ACs on all rooms.

but I don’t want to keep the floor vents. I’m planning to remove the current laminate and carpet coverings and put hybrid flooring throughout. But how would I cover these vents? What should I do to these to keep them stable once I put the hybrid flooring on top of it?

each of the vents in all the rooms are 30cm x 10cm and the hallway has the inlet vent which is 45cm x 36cm.

Re: Covering Floor Vents eoth Hybrid flooring

Hello @ksashok

The vent housing will need to be removed and timber framing will need to be built around the hole. A timber panel will then need to be placed over the frame and the sides properly sealed to the existing flooring. A thin timber panel will need to be used over the patch so that it will be at the same level as the existing flooring. You can then lay the hybrid flooring over this area without worrying about it being weak or dangerous.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Thanks a lot for the quick response @EricL

could you please suggest on the timber framing and the timber panel to use? That would be really helpful.

Re: Covering Floor Vents eoth Hybrid flooring

Hi @ksashok,

You can use 70 x 35mm Pine framing to create the base for your panel. Ensure the framing finishes 19mm below the current floor surface. You can then install pieces of STRUCTAflor 19 x 3600 x 600mm General Purpose YellowTongue over it, secured with screw fixings and Liquid Nails.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Covering Floor Vents eoth Hybrid flooring

Thanks a lot @MitchellMc

The Pine framing that you mentioned is not available in store around my location (3152).

Can 70-x-35mm-outdoor-framing-h3-treated-pine-2-4m be used instead?

Or can you suggest something which is available in VIC?

Also once I get the STRUCTAflor, can I just cut to the size of the vent and use liquid nails and use screws to secure them?

I'm confused with the YellowTongue in it if it is for any specific purpose?

Re: Covering Floor Vents eoth Hybrid flooring

Hi @ksashok,

Yes, the 70x35mm H3 framing pine would work fine.

Yes, you can cut the YellowTongue to size, then glue and screw it to the frame. The YellowTongue is just a common flooring material that would be good for this purpose. It can be used as a finished floor, or it can be used as a subfloor for your hybrid flooring to attach to.

Mitchell mentioned making the frame sit 19mm below the surface of the finished floor, which would be perfect if you are using the YellowTongue as your finished floor and want it to be flush with the existing floor. If you were planning to remove the current flooring and replace it with hybrid flooring that covers everything up, you would need the YellowTongue to finish flush with the top of the subfloor that is beneath the current flooring material. Just remember to take into account the plans for removing and replacing the flooring when installing the frame or things might not line up so well.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Jacob
