How to fix a wobbly table?

I purchased this old timber table. It is extendable and the legs were attached via wing bolt (?) screws. The table top is quite wobbly.

Is there a way to fix the wobble? thanks !!

Re: How to fix a wobbly table?

Hello @bur7890

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about how to fix a wobbly table.

I believe the main bone of contention is the fixing nut of the leg. The wing nut can only be tightened manually so much but not tight enough that it provides a solid fix. I propose removing one of the wing nuts and bringing it to the store and getting a similar regular nut in the same size. I also suggest getting an extra galvanized washer of the same size to add to the assembly. Once you have a similar sized nut, I suggest removing the wing nuts and replacing them with the regular nuts.

I recommend using a socket set to tighten the nut so that the legs will firmly be locked in place.

Let me call on our experienced members @AlanM52 and @JoeAzza for their recommendations.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric

Re: How to fix a wobbly table?

Hi @bur7890,

Wingnut table legs are troublesome.

I agree with @EricL but where possible (enough thread) I use nylon lock nuts along with a larger washer.

Re: How to fix a wobbly table?

Hi @bur7890 , I just had a look at one of my table legs that were from an old table, I suggest that when you take a table leg off, check the stud that’s inserted into the leg, to see it is loose, if so tighten the stud using two nuts locked onto the thread , then tighten with a spanner. I have attached photos of one of my table legs , it has two threaded studs installed, if you have room you could add a second threaded studs installed. See link.
