How to hang a large mirror?

Hi there,

We have a large and heavy mirror we want to hang off the wall. The mirror is around 30kg and measures 1700mm X 1200mm. It has 2 x D rings on the back of either side. Our wall is plasterboard over structural timber. I see most products suggested for mirrors are plasterboard based hooks but I think I’d much rather screw into the wall stud.
Could you please suggest the safest way for me to hang the mirror off the wall and what products I could best use. And if you could suggest what wire to use to hang the mirror’s D Rings off?
FYI - the picture provided makes the mirror look much smaller than how it appears in real life.

I was looking at the measurements of your mirror, thats a HUGE mirror 🙂 doable but a few things I would consider.

-With the D rings on the back, Are you confident that the mirror has been built purposfully to be hung from the D rings?

-Where are the D rings located? The reason I ask is for potential mounting points on the wall. If they are on the edge or off the edge at the top type deal.

-For a 30kg mirror I am heading towards a chain over wire.

-For fixing it to the walls, I would be using a stud finder and straight out screws into the wall. (or large/long screwed hooks.

Everhang 70 x 4.8mm Zinc Plated Square Hook - 15 Pack This one would be my prefered one as it will really go into the studs. (pilot hole needed)

Everhang 5.0 x 32 x 95 x 38mm Hook Screw - 4 Pack Think these hooks are too large, I wa sthinking at least 50mm of thread. 12mm for plaster and 30-40mm for into the studs. (pilot hole needed)

Everhang 25kg Brass Plated Heavy Duty D Ring - 4 Pack in case you want some more D Rings.

Everhang 24kg Brass Plated Simplicity Hangers - 3 Pack I have thrown this in as I have a mirror at home, an ornate one with a very heavy frame about 1,000mm by 800mm being supported by two of these into a plaster wall. Its been there for around a decade and is still going strong.

I would be tempted to have two hooks into the stud wall to support your size frame plus mirror. with a chain between two solid D hooks, so you end up with a short angle, long horizontal and short down angle wire configuration.

As a side note, you could always go the route of a 1500mm long picture rail with an angled edge and the opposing one on the frame so the weight of the frame locks it in place and the weight is supported across two studs at least.

I think you're already on the right page. I would run a decent gauge framing cable across the back. It might be worth getting a professional framer to do this as it really needs the cable ends to be tied very securely. Then use something like two of this style of screws (just find a smaller pack) centre of two studs sticking out about 7mm. The flat head will prevent the cable from slipping off and still allow you to adjust the mirror level.

This is how I hung a much longer mirror but it was no more than 20kgs.
