How to install a DIY double glazed window?

The present window opens outwards on one side only. There is too much traffic noise . Instead of replacing the window with a double glazed window, can I just add a normal glass window in addition on the inside and leave the outer original . So it acts as a double glazed window. The window size is 1400 X 1200 mm.

Re: DIY glazed window

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @xavier. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about windows.

That definitely sounds like a possibility—as long as there’s enough room within the existing window frame or reveal to install the additional pane. If space is tight, you may need to make some alterations to accommodate the extra glass.

What you're describing is often referred to as "secondary glazing," and it can be a really effective way to reduce traffic noise without the full cost or effort of replacing the existing window. Even a single pane of glass with a decent air gap between it and the original window can make a noticeable difference in sound insulation.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: DIY glazed window

Thanks Mitchell, there is 40mm of frame that I can fit this on. I want half to open inside. So I can open the outer window if needed. Where can I get this done? I can fix it myself.

Re: DIY glazed window

Hi @xavier,

Since Bunnings doesn’t stock window units like this, you’d likely need to have a slimline frame custom-made to suit your available 40mm space, especially if you're after one side that can open inwards. That’s not a common off-the-shelf option, so it would require either a local window fabricator or glazier who can build something to your exact needs.

If you're fairly handy and open to researching how window systems are installed and sealed, it’s definitely possible to take this on as a DIY project. Just be mindful of getting a good air seal and maintaining a clean gap between the panes, as that’s what helps reduce the sound transfer.

What about sliding glass windows? Does Bunnings do that?

Re: DIY glazed window

Yes, we do have a range of Polar sliding windows, @xavier. They do appear to be from 80-150mm thick, though.
