How to install insect screen on louvre windows?

We have Louvre windows in our room, and I like to install insect screen for the Summer.

We currently closed our windows at night to minimise mosquito activity.

It is getting warm and unfortunately, we are unable to install air conditioner due to the lack of solid wall.

Would you be able to advise me on this?

Hi @Sunda,

Could we also please trouble you for a photo of the outside of the window? Just want to see if there's enough clearance to add a flyscreen to the exterior side without impacting the louvres. It's certainly not uncommon to have flyscreens on louve windows - we do at home.

Thanks for sharing your question about installing an insect screen on your louvre windows. If you can access the outside frame of your window, I suggest adding an extra frame in front of it using 70 x 35mm Outdoor Framing H3 Treated Pine - 2.4m. The purpose of the frame is to provide a gap between the insect screen that I'm about to suggest and the windowpane of your louvre window. Once the frame has been secured to the front of your window, I suggest having a look at this guide - How to build a flyscreen frame.

Once you've built your flyscreen secure it to the new frame you've installed in front of your window. You should now be able to open your window in the evenings. I also suggest having a look at Dynabreeze 450mm Oscillating Floor Fan to cool off your evenings.

Hi @Sunda,

Given your louvres extend out that far, it sounds like @EricL's solution of extending the frame to accommodate them would be the best solution. It doesn't look like you'd need quite as thick a timber as 70 x 35mm and could likely get away with a thinner Tas Oak moulding.

Hi, I have a similar situation. Could I ask how you would attach the extra frame to the existing (timber) frame?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us.

A lot will depend on the existing frame that you currently have. If your window does not reach the edge of the window frame you could use a timber piece that is not as thick as 70x35. You also have the option of cutting a 90x45 in half lengthwise. When it is this thickness, you can literally drill straight through it with a timber screw. But if it has to be thicker timber, you'll need to screw it from the sides on an angle.

Would it be possible for you to post a photo of your window in its open position? We can then estimate and make a recommendation as to how much timber you'll need to use.

Thanks for getting back to me Eric.

I've uploaded some pics. So with the louvres fully open I would need to come off the frame by at least 55mm and the part of the frame I'd need to attach to is only about 23mm wide.

I propose using 90 x 22mm Decking H3 Treated Pine - 2.4m as a frame extension. Because it is treated pine it can withstand outdoor use. The general steps will be to build the rectangular frame to the size of the current window frame. You have the option of trimming the treated pine, but the cut ends must be sprayed with TWA Woodcare 300g Ecoseal Tanalised Timber Treatment. Please make sure to use outdoors away from the house and any pets or children. Please make sure to use personal protection such as gloves, goggles and a mask.

In order to fix the new frame onto the existing one, I suggest adding an extra panel at the top and bottom to serve as a mounting piece for the extended frame.

@almo have you thought about mounting your flyscreen on the inside? You may need to add a port or work out a way around the lever but the louvres don't appear to extend inside beyond your window frame. You could hold the flyscreen in place with swivel clips for ease of cleaning (eg hosing it off when needed)

I've been trying to nut this out for a while now, my daughter's house is all louvre windows but they swivel in the middle so extend beyond the frame both inside and outside and there's so many of them 🤔

Thanks for the suggestion. I had thought of doing them on the inside but couldn’t figure out a way of accessing the lever to open & close. I’ll have a look at the port option. I would still need to cut the levers down a bit as they stick out beyond the frame when open. I might try it on one window and see how it goes. Cheers.
