How to install masonite underlay?

Hi, I am installing some masonite underlay over a chipboard floor and wondering if I need to use ring shank nails or will smooth shank nails do? I tried hammering some underlay nails in yesterday but bent quite a few so am going to hire a nail gun instead and wanting to know the best type of nail to use. Thanks for any advice. Cheers

Re: How to install masonite underlay

Hello @JB3

Between the smooth shank and the ring shank, it's better to use ring shank nails as they provide a better grip. Generally, when the nail travels through the fibres of the wood they shrink back into their position thereby gripping the nail by the rings. Whereas a smooth shank has no extra grip when the fibres move back.

These nails also feature a flat head that prevents them from punching through the surface of the underlay.

Please make sure to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and a dust mask when working on your flooring.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
