How to mount a TV in bedroom?

Can you please tell us how big your TV is? This will give our members a better idea of how much space it will occupy. We can then make recommendations on possible placement. Would it be possible for you to take a photo of the middle section of your room so that we can see if you have walls or cabinets that can possibly serve as a base for your TV.

I propose building a mobile TV stand made from 70x35 and MDF panels. I have a similar TV around 40" and have made a stand for it. Because it has wheels, you'll be able to move the TV aside when it is not being used. But as I mentioned if you have shelf or a free wall, it could be used as another mounting point or base for the TV.

Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1 and @Nailbag for their recommendations.

I am actually thinking of hanging the tv off the ceiling near the middle of the mirrors. You will need to find a truss to screw the mount to tho. The lintel? above the mirrored doors will probarly be too thin to effectivly mount a bracket (The timber supports in the lintel area may be too far apart)

If you hang it off in the center you may be able to run the necessary cabling through that bulkhead and hide it in the cupboard area. Where is your nearest powerpoint?

Is there always a truss in the ceiling? I got a stud finder but am not sure if it can help with detecting a truss.

My nearest powerpoint is on the wall between the wardrobe and the curtain.

Thanks EricL. My bedroom is quite small, I don't have any space for a TV stand. I'm hoping to mount the TV from either ceiling or wall.

If there is very little space, then it will have to be wall mounted. I propose looking at the Practa 23 - 47" Full Motion TV Wall Mount PRWMFMS. It has excellent reviews and is rated for TV's up to 47". I also recommend having a look at this discussion - Solved: How to mount a TV unit to the wall? by @SouthFieldSnoop.

Practa mount is a great idea. I think I will get a light TV, around 5kg. Do you think the whole thing can be installed on a dry wall, i.e. no stud?

It must be anchored to the timber stud of the wall as plasterboard is not strong enough to hold the weight of the TV while it is out and swinging. I also suggest having a look at this discussion - How to wall-mount a heavy 75-inch 40kg TV by @Sugar. Please note that because your TV will be swinging out, it's important the timber piece you'll be screwing into your timber stud be very secure. It will be subjected not only to the weight of the TV but the dynamic forces that will occur as the it swings out.

Mounting to the ceiling will be your best option. And as @EricL mentioned you need to locate a ceiling joist (these run E/W or N/S). I would also recommend getting a dedicated ceiling mount, which the Practa isn't being wall mount. To my knowledge Bunnings do not range these unless its a special order which @EricL can confirm. If not Google "TV ceiling mount"

The difference is that the direction of the ceiling joist will not be positioned for best viewing. Ceiling mounts have a 360deg swivel plus tilt allowing for the perfect angle both horizontally and vertically. The drop poles come in different lengths or some can be trimmed as required so nowhere near as long at these photos.

Your first issue however getting power to the TV which a sparky will be required. I would get them involved first to see if getting a powerpoint where it's needed is even possible.

As per @EricL's suggestion can we have a photo further back of that area.

You also need to consider power (maybe ugly extension lead) and antenna (is there a wall point).

Is there a level above the bedroom?

Yes, you can use a stud finder to locate the ceiling joist.

There will be a support across the ceiling space for the floor above, A stud finder will help locate it. The suggestion of @Nailbag's ceiling brcket is what i wa sthinking of to hang the tv from with the power for it going through the lintel area and into your wardrobe.

Yep that would work fine. This one works well. Just remember the joist will most likely be in the wrong spot. Thats when using the bracket I suggest allow you to compensate.

Hi @Dave-1 , my bedroom is on the top floor, will there be a ceiling joist? Yes, I will definitely need an extension cord and hide it in the wardrobe.

@Nailbag sorry, I couldn't find your previous comment about the bracket, I only found your comment about the ceiling mount with photo (which is very helpful - thank you). Which bracket do you recommend?

Yes you should find a ceiling joist and @Nailbag's stud finder will make it a lot easier to find, just take it easy as you move the stud finder across the ceiling. Maybe practice on a wall first to get confident before trying with the ceiling. It took me a few trys to narrow down where the studs are.

Hi @Dave-1 I got the same stud finder that @Nailbag recommended. Used it when installing my blinds and curtains but I'm still not confident.

Stud walls are 600mm apart and ceiling joists are 600mm apart (or 900mm depending) so if you kind of find one (unsure) you can check against finding the next one along. Practice on the wall work from the door along maybe to make it easier.
