How to paint ceiling and skylight shaft?

Hi there,

We have had a new skylight installed in our apartment, complete with open skylight shaft. I need to paint the new skylight shaft as well as repainting the existing ceiling due to patching of the plaster work and I would like to get some advice on paint selection.

Can I use a ceiling paint on both the ceiling and the sides of the skylight shaft, or should I opt for a wall paint for the skylight shaft walls?

I have read that Taubmans Tradex Ceiling Paint could be a good option: https://www.bunnings.com.au/taubmans-tradex-white-flat-interior-ceiling-paint-15l_p1540673?store=731...

If I was to use the above paint and it is suitable; could I apply it directly to the new drywall of the skylight shaft and apply 2 coats, or would I need to prime first?

Finally, is the Tradex Taubmans ceiling paint suitable to repaint our cornice coving?

Photo of the new skylight attached.

Thanks,

Daniel

Re: How to paint ceiling and skylight shaft?

Hello @dstanley

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about painting your ceiling.

If you have newly installed plasterboard, it's best to prime the surface before applying a topcoat. In this instance, if you are using Taubmans Tradex White Flat Interior Ceiling Paint it recommends using Taubmans 10L Tradex Ultra Prep White Undercoat before applying the ceiling paint.

Because your skylight shaft will be exposed to a lot of sunlight, it might be necessary to use a much stronger paint. Something that can put up with the high UV exposure and heat that the shaft will experience.

Allow me to make some inquires with our paint specialist. As soon as I have more information, I'll get back to you.

In regards to the cornice, it is possible to use your ceiling paint on it. Please keep in mind that the cornice will need to be prepared properly before being painted.

Thank you for your patience.

Eric

Re: How to paint ceiling and skylight shaft?

Hi Eric,

Thank you for that information - it's very helpful.

The skylight is a velux window which supposedly filters out 99% of UV rays and 80% of heat so hoping that the ceiling paint will be sufficient, but please let me know if you hear otherwise.

Is it possible to obtain a tester pot of the taubmans tradex ceiling paint from Bunnings to sample before applying to the whole ceiling? I can't see any samples for these paint types.

Thanks

Daniel

Re: How to paint ceiling and skylight shaft?

Hi Daniel (@dstanley),

I've double-checked with Taubmans and the Taubmans Tradex White Flat Interior Ceiling Paint is perfectly fine to use within the skylight alcove, on the ceiling and the cornice. No issue there at all.

Unfortunately, ceiling paints are not typically supplied in sample pots as they are plain white. If seeing the exact colour is a priority, I'd recommend doing a test section first to ensure you are happy with it. If you intend to tint the ceiling paint, a sample of that colour can be provided in the normal sample pots from Taubsmans.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
