How to sand and polish concrete floor?

Hi all!

I finally decided to rip off the hideous carpet tiles from the extension of the house!

We're thinking of sanding and polishing the floor in the dining area (which is all concrete), while we laminate the floors in the bedroom and living room, but I'd love to hear if there are better or alternative ways to make the floors more aesthetic.

How would you guys go about sanding, filling gaps or cracks and sanding? Are there any products I should get?

While it's great you're considering polishing the concrete, it's important to note that polished concrete floors usually start with a smoother, higher-quality surface. Since your concrete subfloor has cracks, voids, and an uneven surface, attempting to polish it directly may not give you the result you're hoping for. If you're set on achieving a polished concrete look, I recommend applying a self-levelling cement first to smooth over the imperfections, then proceed with the polishing process for a better finish.

Additionally, if you're working with an older building, be cautious of potential asbestos in the adhesive used for the carpet tiles. If you're unsure, it's worth having the area tested or consulting a professional to ensure safe removal.

Do I need to scrap any of the glue etc before self-levelling cement?

To ensure the self-levelling cement adheres correctly, you will likely need to remove any adhesive or glue residue left from the carpet tiles. This can interfere with the bonding process. It’s also a good idea to apply a primer to the concrete after cleaning, as this will improve the adhesion of the self-levelling cement.

However, if you're not set on achieving a polished concrete look and want a simpler solution, you might want to consider installing hybrid vinyl flooring over the current concrete. It’s much less work, requires minimal preparation, and provides a durable, aesthetically pleasing finish for your space without the need for sanding or extensive filling.
