How to transition 14mm threshold between existing tile and new laminate floor?

We are getting rid of carpet and installing a new laminate floor to my house which connects to the existing kitchen tile floors.

We found out that there were tiles on top of tiles which made the height difference about 14mm.

Is there a transom ramp that is ok looking for a domestic house for this height?

Hi @Riri,

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

Unfortunately, I can't find a purpose-made transition ramp for this change in height.

It's not perfect, but you could try this 12 x 12mm 2.4m Tri Quad Clear Pine or this Porta 12x12mm 2.4m Quad Clear Pine to soften the lip.

Yes it is quite high...

Would you do anything to the pine to make it more robust?

It will be an area of the house where lots of foot traffic.

Hi @Riri,

I'd glue it down with Liquid Nails and then shoot finish nails through it into the ground. As long as the timber is solidly attached, you shouldn't have any issues.

The only other option I see is to raise the height of the floor where the laminate flooring is being laid.

Is it timber or concrete where the new flooring is being laid?

You could increase the height using floor leveller or Dunlop Timber Floor Leveller before laying your laminate flooring over the top. This would then bring in the possibility of using a ramp like this Roberts 1.65m Silver Senior Ramp Floating Floor Trim.

Afternoon @Riri

I must admit it surpprised me twhen i found the same tiles overlaid with more tiles 🙂 I have that in my loungeroom when stepping into the dining room. It has been that way for the past 15 years 😲 lol I still havnt given it an edge.

Metal Mate 12 x 12 x 1.4mm 3m Aluminium Equal Angle - Silver The 2mm difference you wont notice.

As an edge for the transition.Both ways I would use liquid nails to glue it down. My prefernce without seeing a photo is the second as it has a smaller look impact.

I have never tripped on my exposed edge, As long as its clearly seen I wouldnt think of it as a problem.

Good to know that it isn't a massive trip hazard.

The angle will be a much quicker and budget friendly solution.

Will also see how to increase the level as advise above to help.

Though 14mm isn't a lot, personally I think you will find it will be a decent trip hazard being a a major thoroughfair, even if you were to use some form of trim.

Your simplest option may be to have a VERY gradual build up to the transition with some form of leveller. But you would need to speak to the floor installers as anything more than 1-2mm can compromise the joint of boards short or long term.

If you don't love your kitchen tiles, I would be lifting and replacing personally if this is your forever home.
