How to treat Hevea panel?

Hello, I'm aiming to build an office desk and would like to get Specrite 2200 x 600 x 26mm Hevea Panel. However I noted it's untreated and the surface is a bit rough. Appreciate your advice on what product should I get to give it a smooth finish but not to be too glossy, how many coats required, and do I need to coat all sides or the top exposed only?

Also, I'll cut it down to 1600mm wide, how should I treat the edge?

Thanks in advance

Re: How to treat Hevea panel?

Hello @Amro

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your Hevea panel.

I suggest having a quick look at this guide - How to restore wooden furniture. It will show you how the surface is sanded and prepared for sealing. The minimum number of coats is 2, but some members choose to add an extra coat for protection. It would be best to coat the entire benchtop to prevent it from being damaged by moisture. The cut end is usually sanded down smooth and is painted or sealed over with your preferred coating.

Here is a link to our best advice:  How do you finish a timber desktop? I also recommend having a quick look at this discussion - How to choose the best finish for timber benchtop by @lemonsrus

Re: How to treat Hevea panel?

Hi Eric, many thanks for the advice! Appreciated

Just wondering whether 1L of varnish would be enough to coat all sides 2 times at least (1800x600 panel)

Regards

Amro

Re: How to treat Hevea panel?

Hello @Amro

A single 1L can of varnish will be enough to cover the panel. If you look at the back of the can, it will tell you the number of square meters the varnish will cover.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.
