How to use Ply slats around fireplace?

Hi team,

I have seen a lot of ideas using ply would sheets cut into strips to surround gas fireplace. I like the look and wouldn’t mind doing this myself. Does this need to be a particular type of ply? What type of stain, varnish would/can I use. And best way to attach. Any and all help appreciated. The black wall is my fireplace I want to complete this on.

Personally, I haven't seen ply used, but that might just be because I haven't come across it. Ply consists of several layers of laminated wood, and all but the best qualities have voids within the thickness. Due to the multiple layers that make up the board, you can be left with some rough edges.

As seen in your second image, a timber baton would typically be used. This would be a considerably higher cost than sheeting. Normally, this batoned look has some depth to its profile, and to do that with sheeting, you'd need something at least as thick as the Ecoply 2400 x 1200mm 21mm Flooring F11 Plywood Pine and even then it's only 21mm thick, which might not achieve the impact you're looking for.

The timber strips can be glued in place with Liquid Nails, but you might need to tack them in place with small pin nails until the glue dries.

Just about all stain and varnishes will be suitable, and your choice really comes down to the colour you are looking more. Something to remember, apart from the rough edges of the ply, is that the ply layers themselves can be different colours, so you'll see its layered effect from the side profile.
