How to use SpecRite Acacia Golden Panel for a DIY study table?

Hi everyone,

I recently came across the SpecRite Acacia Golden Panel (1800 x 600 x 18mm) at Bunnings and thought it would make a great tabletop for a study table. I’m considering buying it and attaching table legs, but I’m not sure if there’s more to it than that.

Here are some questions I’d appreciate help with:

Can this panel be used straight out of the box, or does it require sanding or additional treatments like oiling?

Are there any specific table legs or brackets you’d recommend for stability and ease of assembly?

Could someone share a step-by-step guide or a video tutorial on setting it up as a desk?

Those Specrite panels are very nice and it is a good idea to varnish them so stains dont go into the timber and can be wiped of with ease.

The best option,

Cabot's 250ml Gloss Water Based Cabothane Clear Interior Varnish I/N: 1520401 $22^.70

You can also oil them but takes more time and steps to complete and will need redoing periodically and wont protect the timber as well from stains.

The specrite descriptive product cover sheet shows the use of legs on the panels.

All you need to do is choose your legs and measure in from the edges your prefered leg spacing. and repeat for all the 4 corners.

You can stain or varnish the table after the legs go on if that helps.

As for legs Bunning has a few different different styles (note most tables are 700mm from the ground for ease of sitting at etc.) You can get 600mm legs if it suits your purpose, OR 400 mm if you are wanting a coffee table height.

For the Specrite timber i might put a 5th leg (Middle rear) if the timber has some wiegth on it like a computer.

Thank you for your question about creating a desk with the Specrite 1800 x 600 x 18mm Golden Teak Acacia Multi Use Panel.

I see @Jewelleryrescue has already provided some fantastic advice.

You'll need to give the panel a light sand and then coat it with wax, oil or varnish to ensure you get the best out of it.

Use some 180 Grit Sandpaper to round the edges and give the surface a light sand. Once sanded, brush it down to remove any sawdust.

You can then apply a coating. I'd suggest using a clear oil such as Feast Watson Scandinavian Oil. Ensure the surface is perfectly clean before applying the oil with a microfibre cloth. Follow the instructions on the packaging closely for the best results.

Once it is sanded and oiled, the RapidHome 73.2 x 50 x 6cm Black Rio Steel Tube Desk Furniture Legs would be a good option.
