Serving tray built using floating floor materials

I made this serving tray using left over off cuts off floating timber floor boards and tas oak

Materials

Tray size 405mm long x 310mm wide
Floating timber floor boards for base, 12mm thick

Tasmanian oak dar timber 40mm x 12mm

Tools

Router to cut slots for handles

Mitre saw

Water resistant glue

Countersunk screws for mounting the side rails

Sandpaper, 120 and 240 grit

Sander

Tape measure

Square

Clamps

Steps

Step 1

Cut floor boards to size of tray required

Glue boards to required width, mine is 285mm wide.

Cut tray sides to fit around the outside of the base. I cut out the slots for the handles using a jigsaw and router to cleanup, I made a template to get a neat finish.

I also joined the ends of the timber by making the joints as a box joint, then glued.

I pre drilled mounting holes on the side rails

Step 2

I sanded the sides and stained to match the base, I used Japan black stain and clear varnish

Step 3

Once dried, fitted the side to the base using black countersunk screws

Thats a nice reuse of some leftover timber 🙂 And must say I agree with @MitchellMc the effort you put into the joints fit properly is something Id like to attain one day 🙂
